Boubyan Island is a large, uninhabited island on Kuwait's border with Iraq, in the environmentally sensitive headwaters of the Arabian Gulf. Kuwait's Ministry of Public Works commissioned a major planning effort to study the island's marine and land life and then determine a sustainable development strategy.HOK's master plan recommends creating a new nature preserve on the island's northern half. The plan limits development across the rest of the island to small clusters strategically located to cause minimal environmental impact. These clusters include a new container port and free-trade zone, a lakefront community and a series of low-density resorts.
