if i may summarize the commentary: the car drives a slow lap at first and scans the track. after that, it calculates the optimal throttle, brake and steering input. then it does fast laps, even faster than a human driver could do it (so they say, but they obviously did not compete with a professional driver here). in any case, the machine would beat a human driver on consistency i guess, since it should be able to go hundreds of laps without touching any of the pylons.
