27th Arab Children Congress - mobile film group exercises

Sure. The Arab Children Congress was initiated by Her Majesty Queen Noor Al Hussein following the 1980 Arab Summit Conference in Amman. HM Queen Noor wanted to give 14-16 year olds the same opportunity as nations leaders to express their needs and aspirations and to be heard by decision makers in the Arab world. The Congress gathers in Jordan hundreds of youth from Arab and European countries for a week of visiting, learning and cultural interaction especially designed to promote peace, tolerance amd understanding.

For the first time this year’s Congress introduced a film workshop. Screen literacy is very important, and it is the universal language that we and generations to come are going to be using for quite a while into the future. Communicating effectively in pictures and sound is very important if we are to impact social change. Aterall, it’s our stories and how we tell them that will always touch people’s hearts and move us to action.

The choice for this pilot was mobile camera phones – a tool which we like and use anyway, so we explored how to make this mobile more powerful by using it to express our point of view, document a situation or help us reflect. It’s a way for us to see, hear and express differently, and hopefully with impact. It’s also a process aimed at empowering anyone to speak out and believe they can change the world and actually go out and do so. It’s a process that embraces the shift from legacy media towards citizen voices, in a responsible way that embraces positive human values and a collaborative spirit.
