Al Ammarin on Culture - Beidha, Jordan

Get the Flash Player to see this player.

Here the Ammarins talk about what's important to them, their nomadic lifestyle and what they miss. In this edit, stories of mythology are shared about the relationship of people and place. This assembly of a few minutes is part of over hours of footage we've been documenting since 1996 on the culture and heritage of the bedu of the south of Jordan, mainly Beidha and Wadi Rum areas. This material was shot in 2003. Torfa still lives a 100% nomadic life in the mountains of Al Sharah. One of the most beautiful human beings you can meet in life. I'm lucky to know her. Visit the Ammarin Bedouin Camp in Beidha http://bedouincamp.net/ Sadly, Sheikh Suleiman passed away in 2007. A huge loss. I cherish the few recordings we do have of him. At least we will keep his story and his vision alive - like he asked for his own culture. I think of him and miss him every single time I'm in Beidha! This documentation was part of a submission to UNESCO's Masterpieces of Oral and Intangible Heritage - a file we worked on in 2003/4 and got the Oral heritage of Petra and Wadi Rum Jordan on the masterpiece list.

  • Torfa bin Sabbah herself is 100% nomadic only. She lives with her single 20smtg daughter, both shepherdesses, most of the year in an oak forrest in the Sharah mountains.

There are schools in Beidha and Wadi Musa – Torfa’s grandkids go there. They live in the village – the kids who walk into the tent who she greets.

Yes, no phones, no cars, no electricity for Torfa. her daughter does have a mobile which she charges at her brother’s house in the village, or the camp, or anyone with power. They have a light bulb that runs on gas/propane. otherwise its a camp fire and nature. Torfa is very grounded and content. When you visit her, it’s like this amazing magical comfort engulfs you. Incredible!

Thanks for watching and for the comment!
